Elden Ring: How to Complete Jar Bairn's Questline
Jun-13-2025 PST
Follow this guide to fully complete Jar Bairn's quest, unlock unique Elden Ring Items, and collect extra Elden Ring Runes along the way.
Step 1: Finding Jar Bairn in Jarburg
You can find Jar Bairn sitting atop a stairway at the western end of Jarburg, a hidden area beneath the Carian Study Hall in Liurnia. To reach it, drop carefully down the cliff edges behind the Study Hall, using gravestones and ledges.
Jar Bairn will greet you warmly and ask if you're the new Potentate, a protector of the jars. However, they'll quickly reject you because your hands are "too rough." This charming interaction marks the beginning of their journey.
Important: Do not harm any of the living jars in Jarburg. Doing so will lock you out of the entire questline.
Step 2: Progress Alexander's Story
For Jar Bairn's dialogue to continue, you must meet or help Iron Fist Alexander at least once. His story begins in Limgrave, where he's stuck in a hole near Saintsbridge. Freeing him and progressing his quest (especially up to his appearance in Radahn's Festival) is essential.
After interacting with Alexander at least once, return to Jarburg and reload the area by resting at the Site of Grace. Speak to Jar Bairn again. They'll start talking about the wide world and eventually mention poachers who target jarfolk.
Keep reloading and exhausting their dialogue until no new lines appear.
Step 3: Introducing Diallos
Next, you'll need to progress Diallos's questline. He can be first met at the Roundtable Hold, and later at Volcano Manor if you join their ranks. Complete Volcano Manor's contracts, or defeat Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, to cause Diallos to leave the manor.
Shortly after, Diallos will appear in Jarburg. Reload the area several times, and speak with both Diallos and Jar Bairn repeatedly. Jar Bairn will comment that Diallos is kind, but not very strong, and wonders if he'd make a good Potentate.
These interactions continue their character development and prepare you for a critical moment in the story.
Step 4: Tragedy Strikes Jarburg
After defeating General Radahn and exhausting Alexander's dialogue in Radahn's arena, return to Jarburg. If the event hasn't triggered, try:
Resting at the Jarburg Site of Grace and choosing "Pass Time until Nightfall."
Warping between Radahn's Site of Grace and Jarburg to force progression.
Eventually, you'll find several jars destroyed, and Diallos mortally wounded at the center of the village. Speak to him, he'll ask if he protected the village well. Jar Bairn can be found just south of him, behind his legs, quietly mourning.
This emotional scene highlights the cost of kindness in a world of violence.
Step 5: Jar Bairn's Transformation
Reload the area again. You'll find Jar Bairn attempting to inherit Diallos's strength, still determined to become a warrior. Speak to them once more, then reload the area.
Jar Bairn returns to their original spot, reflecting on their desire to explore the world. Now is the time to give them Alexander's Innards, which you'll receive for completing Iron Fist Alexander's questline (usually concluded in Crumbling Farum Azula).
After handing over the innards, reload the area one last time.
Step 6: Claim Your Rewards
Upon your return, Jar Bairn will be gone, having embarked on their journey to become a Warrior Jar. Where they sat, you'll now find the Companion Jar Talisman, a key Elden Ring Item that enhances the potency of thrown pot items.
In the middle of Jarburg, you'll also find Diallos's Mask and Hoslow's Petal Whip, powerful and rare weapons with Blood Loss build-up, highly valued for Dexterity builds.
Alternative Path
If you prefer a peaceful outcome, it is possible to avoid the poacher attack entirely:
Do not engage with Diallos's questline at all.
Complete Alexander's quest and defeat Rykard.
Return to Jarburg and give Alexander's Innards to Jar Bairn.
In this version, the village remains unharmed. You'll still receive the Companion Jar Talisman, but you won't get Diallos's gear or his heartbreaking final scene.
Additional Tips for Players
Completing Jar Bairn's questline offers unique lore depth and emotional storytelling rarely found in side quests.
The Elden Ring Runes gained through battles and interactions here are modest, but the Companion Jar Talisman and Hoslow's Petal Whip are incredibly valuable Elden Ring Items for certain builds.
Jarburg itself is a peaceful, rune-rich area early in the game, thanks to its defenseless enemies, though harming them ruins the quest.
Conclusion
Jar Bairn's quest is one of Elden Ring's most heartfelt side stories. It's a tale of innocence, ambition, and loss, told not through grand battles but through the quiet evolution of a small, breakable character in a brutal world. For those who take the time to see it through, the rewards, both emotional and material, are well worth the effort.
Whether you're chasing Elden Ring Runes, uncovering lore, or hunting for powerful Elden Ring Items, don't overlook Jar Bairn. Sometimes, the smallest pots hold the greatest courage.
